Measuring Sponsorship ROI: 7 KPIs That Go Beyond Reach
"What did that sponsorship actually get us?" It's the question every sponsorship professional gets from management sooner or later and "a lot of reach" is rarely a satisfying answer. Below are seven KPIs that give a fuller picture.
1. Share of voice within the category
How much of the total visibility around an event or rights holder went to your brand, relative to competitors also active around the same platform?
2. Engagement rate on activated content
Not views, but interactions: shares, comments, saves. These say more about relevance than pure impressions.
3. Sentiment shift
Measure brand sentiment before and after the partnership through social listening or a short survey. A partnership that generates visibility but doesn't improve sentiment misses part of its potential.
4. Lead quality, not just lead volume
In B2B sponsorship, the number of contacts generated matters less than how many of them actually make it into the sales funnel.
5. Employee engagement
Sponsoring, for example, a sports club or charity often has internal value too: engagement and pride among your own staff. Measurable through short internal surveys.
6. Repeat value of the partnership
A partnership delivering the same or growing results year after year is worth more than a one-off spike in visibility.
7. Comparison with media value equivalent (with the necessary nuance)
Media value equivalent (MVE) remains a contested metric, but as one of several KPIs, never the only one, it still provides a comparison point with paid media.
